City Overview

Flag of Sweden

Surprisingly Stockholm is the second largest tech and startup hub in the world, second only to Silicon Valley.
The city is called ‘beauty on water’. Take a look at the map and you will see this is true with a historic core Stockholm is a modern and ever-evolving city.

The main tourist sites I would recommend are:

VisitStockholm

LonelyPlanet

Airport to Central

Map of the Stockholm area
Stockholm area map

I am most familiar with Arlanda so I will concentrate on that airport.
Commuter trains to the city center depart twice an hour from and take around 45 minutes. Bus and taxi are also available. The Flygbussarna Coaches depart every 10-15 minutes between to the City Terminal (next to the Central Station) and travel time is around 35-45 minutes. More in the Metro section for routes and costs of tickets.

IMPORTANT !!…Look for the TravelCard at the airport.

My favorite video about the Arlanda airport train by the SwedishLad.

Where to stay

Scandic Malmen
Scandic Malmen

Depending on your visit whether business or vacation it is important to find a hotel that fits your budget and itinerary. I had a budget experience at the Rest n Fly at the airport and would recommend it for a long sleep with a long layover. For more ideas in the city center and different price points, I would start with Booking’s 30 Best Hotels in Stockholm.

Metro

IMPORTANT !!…Look for the TravelCard at the airport.

I always tie in my hotel with the metro when doing my research before the trip. I use Rome2Rio and Google Maps to find the hotel and metro combo that works for my trip.

There is a lot of very nice art in the metro…Check out Study in Sweden

And Art in the Subway

Where to eat

Skip the meatballs unless you are going to an Ikea store.. No, really the Swedes have an incredible variety of dishes based on seafood. Also, like any major metro area a full complement of street food trucks with foods from around the world.

Try husmanskost it is what I would call comfort food, south USA comfort food.

Gamla Stan..The Old Town
Stockholm Royal Palace ..Watch the changing of the guard
Skansen… Outdoor museum
Omnipollos Hatt ..For lunch pizza n beer!!
Stroll Götgatan..Near Omnipollos
Waterfront boat tours

Free museums:

Post Script

A balance of old and new, variety of a Baltic menu with plenty of world food choices, long days in the summer, and lively nightlife. If you are a digital nomad this could be the city for you.
